Whether you’re taking bus tours in Washington D.C., or planning to go on your own, follow this guide by DC Trails to make the most of your trip.

Day 1

On the morning of your first day, we recommend going to Eastern Market to walk around and enjoy the variety of restaurants and cafes. Our bus tours in Washington D.C. will give you the chance to learn about the area’s history while indulging in delicious treats.

After brunch, head west to the National Mall, home to the Smithsonian Museums, which are all free to visit. Spend the afternoon exploring some of the most popular ones, including the Air & Space Museum, American History Museum, and Natural History Museum. You can either do a public tour offered by the museums or you can hire private guided bus tours in Washington D.C.

For dinner, we recommend making a reservation at Old Ebbitt Grill, the oldest saloon in D.C. After dinner, we recommend exploring the memorials on the National Mall. Our National Mall tour takes you to see the Washington Monument, WW2 Memorial, MLK Memorial, and much more.

Day 2

For day 2, we recommend waking up early and visiting Arlington National Cemetery. We offer a guided tour that will take you through the highlights of these sacred grounds, including the Kennedy Grave and the Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

For lunch, head over to Georgetown and check out Martin’s Tavern, which was a favorite of President John F. Kennedy. Legend has it that he proposed to Jacqueline Kennedy in what is now known as the “proposal booth.”

From Georgetown, head to Chinatown, which is a small but vibrant neighborhood with a lot to discover. Some of the highlights include the National Portrait Gallery, which is free to explore and houses the largest collection of presidential portraits outside of the White House.

There are endless options for dinner in the Chinatown neighborhood.

Day 3

On your last day in D.C., start off by visiting Mount Vernon.

For lunch, explore Old Town Alexandria, a charming neighborhood with great options for shopping and dining.

Watch a performance at Kennedy Center in the evening where they host free shows every night from 6 pm.
