GATEWAY TO THE POCONO BY LAND & BY RAIL Jim Thorpe

GATEWAY TO THE POCONO BY LAND & BY RAIL Jim Thorpe

We have a jam-packed outing you will not soon forget.
We are traveling to a town known by the famous athlete
born there – Jim Thorpe. You will fall in love with this
quaint Victorian town nestled in the breathtaking
Lehigh River Gorge. You will see why the area is
referred to as the “Switzerland of America” because
of its picturesque scenery, mountainous location, and
architecture. The town has a fascinating history of
romance, struggle, survival, boom, bust and revival.
Originally named Mauch Chunk, during the Victorian
era the town was second only to Niagara Falls as the
most visited tourist destination in the country. In 1953
following the death of renowned athlete and Olympic
medal winner Jim Thorpe, the struggling town decided
to memorialize and adopted the name of Jim Thorpe.
We begin our day in Jim Thorpe at the Visitor Center
where we will leave our coach and board a trolley and
met its driver/guide for a narrated tour highlighting
the history of the area and its natural beauty. The trolley
tour showcases all the best of this area — the Jim
Thorpe Memorial, the Lehigh Gorge State Park, up
Broadway past all the shops, restaurants, museums
and historic buildings downtown on to Mauch Chuck
Lake. Here, we will leave our trolley to enjoy lunch at
Macaluso’s Italian Restaurant. before Following
lunch, we board the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway to
take our seats in the Dome Car to enjoy the scenic
beauty of the narrated round trip that follows the
majestic Lehigh River over bridges, through Glen

Onoko, and into the Lehigh Gorge State Park. High-
rising cliffs, mountain scenery, and wildlife surround the

train along the forested route to Old Penn Haven. What
a full day of adventure and exploration in such a
charming Victorian town. On the return trip we will stop
at a Cracker Barrel for dinner ($02 gift card). NOTE:
This tour is limited to 33 persons.

We will depart
Manassas at 6:15 a.m. and Woodbridge at 7:00 a.m.
Return time is approximately 9:30 p.m.
