Our DC Trails team has outlined a few important things for visitors to know about the Washington Monument before going to visit the site.

The history…

The Washington Monument was built in 1884 and opened to the public in 1888 to celebrate our founding father and first president. This was the first monument to be placed on the famous National Mall. Upon construction in 1884, the Washington Monument was the tallest building in the world, towering over all other buildings in Washington at a height of 555 feet. The monument is adorned with a pyramid made from aluminum, which at the time was highly regarded as a very expensive metal.

How to get there…

If you are on the National Mall, the Circulator bus will take you to not only the Washington Monument, but it will also pass by several historically important memorials and monuments.

If you are coming from another area in the city, Washington, D.C. has an efficient, well-connected metro system that will take you to the Smithsonian station on the blue, orange and silver lines. Upon arrival, you will see signs to exit at the National Mall, where you will see the Washington Monument as soon as you step outside of the station.
