You can explore the hometown of George Washington while watching numerous actors in colonial historical attire. Mount Vernon is located along the banks of the Potomac River and is less than an hour’s drive from the nation’s capital. Tours to Mount Vernon are an excellent way to create many memories with friends and family during the holiday season.

Here are several fun activities to do in or near Mount Vernon during the Thanksgiving holidays.

1. Experience Mount Vernon by Candlelight

Mount Vernon by Candlelight is always a favorite activity during the holiday season. A lantern-lit walk allows you to tour the entire historic area while also visiting various outbuildings and the slave quarters. Lady Washington will also welcome you inside the mansion to share many interesting stories of past Christmases. You can also visit the Greenhouse and experience 18th-century dancing.

2. Thanksgiving Recipes

You can bring a piece of Mount Vernon to your holiday celebration with original recipes from the Mount Vernon Inn. These recipes include countless different types of bread, desserts, meats, stews, and vegetables. All of these delicious recipes are a great way to experience the rich culinary traditions of Mount Vernon.

3. Meet Aladdin the Camel

Aladdin the camel is always a popular attraction during the Thanksgiving holidays. George Washington paid 18 shillings, which is nearly $870 in today’s money, to bring a camel to Mount Vernon to entertain all of his guests. Mount Vernon continues this tradition by letting visitors enjoy a visit from Aladdin throughout the holiday season.

4. Explore European-Style Holiday Markets

If you want to extend your trip, head to Washington, DC, to enjoy its famous holiday markets. The Downtown Holiday Market, celebrating its 20th year, stretches across two blocks of F Street by the National Portrait Gallery and features dozens of vendors, food stands, and live entertainment. For a smaller setting, the DC Holiday Market at Dupont Circle offers a boutique shopping experience with over 30 artisans and small businesses from November 22 to December 15. Both are about a 45-minute drive from Mount Vernon.

5. Bask in Festive Lights and Greenery

Just north of Mount Vernon, Washington, DC, hosts two major light displays. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo transforms for ZooLights, an annual event featuring LED displays and animal-themed lanterns from November 22 to January 4. Timed passes are required. Another favorite is the U.S. Botanic Garden’s “Season’s Greenings” exhibit, which showcases Washington, DC, landmarks made from plants and model trains weaving through oversized greenery.

6. Immerse Yourself in Arts and Culture

A short drive from Mount Vernon brings you to some of DC’s top cultural experiences. The National Gallery of Art is hosting Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment, featuring masterpieces by Monet, Renoir, and Degas. The Washington Ballet presents its DC-themed version of The Nutcracker, reimagined in historic Georgetown with a George Washington-inspired hero. You can also enjoy Elf in Concert at The Kennedy Center, where the National Symphony Orchestra performs the score live from November 29 to December 1.

7. Join in Parades, Races, and Historical Festivities

While the famous Thanksgiving parade takes place in New York, the Washington, DC, area hosts its own celebrations. The Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade in Silver Spring (about an hour from Mount Vernon) happens on Saturday, November 16, featuring marching bands, giant balloons, and Santa Claus. You can also participate in local “Turkey Trot” races in Arlington, Alexandria, or Bethesda.

Back in Mount Vernon, the Christmas Illuminations at George Washington’s Estate run from December 20-22, featuring holiday lights, fireworks over the Potomac River, and live historical demonstrations.

What A DC Charter Bus Can Offer You https://dctrails.com/what-a-dc-charter-bus-can-offer-you/ https://dctrails.com/what-a-dc-charter-bus-can-offer-you/#respond Mon, 21 Jun 2021 10:27:28 +0000 https://dctrails.com/?p=728 Continue reading What A DC Charter Bus Can Offer You]]> At DC Trails, we pride ourselves on our DC charter bus tours and other bus services. That’s why we wanted to highlight a few things that a charter bus company can offer, as well as some other tips that can help you along the way.

Charter Buses Make Traveling Easier

Regardless of where you’re going, you and your family deserve to travel in style and have a bus company that gives you the option of traveling exactly where you want to go – not the other way around. One great thing people love about DC charter buses is that you don’t have to worry about directions, parking, driving, and most importantly, you won’t have to cram in beside strangers during your trip/tour. Our DC Trail driver and team will handle all of the logistics so you can enjoy the tour and your family and friends.

Planning for Your DC Charter Bus

Before booking your private charter or trip, you need to consider and plan out some important details. If your group is made up of seniors, be sure to ask about specific tours that may be right for that age group. Our Bluebird Senior Tours are designed and customized for that demographic. Always be sure that you know exactly how many people are traveling if there will be children, and any important stops or other information you need to communicate with your bus company.

Choose a Reputable DC Bus Company

Always ask the company about their experience and their buses and fleet. After all, you want to be sure that you have the right bus and options based on your group and trip. Be wary of any company that doesn’t have this information clearly on their website or is hesitant to give you specifics on their fleet, destinations, or other important information.

Where Do Want to Go? DC Trails Can Take You

At DC Trails, we’re proud to only offer DC charter bus services, but we also can take you to many different locations. If you’re looking to go to NY for a weekend, our bus services can take you to and from Washington and NY. Some other locations we go include Niagara Falls, Virginia Beach, Orlando, Philadelphia, and more.

The Benefits of Washington DC Private Tours https://dctrails.com/the-benefits-of-washington-dc-private-tours/ https://dctrails.com/the-benefits-of-washington-dc-private-tours/#respond Tue, 15 Jun 2021 10:26:08 +0000 https://dctrails.com/?p=725 Continue reading The Benefits of Washington DC Private Tours]]> Have you been mulling over whether you should book that private tour of Washington, or choose a public one? While you may think the two are similar, they definitely are not. Here is why you should choose a private tour and how DC Trails can help!

Private Bus Tours vs. Public Options

As the name would suggest, a private option offers you and your group a closed and private tour and bus all to yourselves. This is a great option for those looking to really take in the city on their own terms without having to worry about not getting on a bus seat or missing key locations and places they wanted to check out. While some may think this is a prdicy option, for those traveling with big families or groups, it often is a more affordable option than having to buy individual tickets and other expenses that come along with non-private options.

Public tours on the other hand can’t compete with private bus tours. With public tours, you are paired with strangers and a large group. Unlike private tours, you are left touring at a specific pace, and you don’t get the same level of enjoyment or attention. There are also what are known as “pay what you can tour” but again, with these, you really won’t get the same level of enjoyment and relaxation as you would with a private option.

Better Buses

Now that you understand the benefits a private tour can offer, another big aspect, besides the actual “tour” benefits are the buses and fleet you can get with a private bus company like Dc Trails. We’re proud to have the very best when it comes to buses. Our fleet includes shuttle buses, passenger coach buses.

Unfortunately, with many public tours, due to the constant wear and tear, along with less attention to details, the buses you get aren’t as nice, and you don’t get to choose based on your needs.

What DC Trails Can Offer You

Not only do we provide the very best in private tours of Washington DC, but we also offer so much more. Our charter destinations and services also include trips to New York, Atlantic City, sports teams and events, conference transportation, weddings, and more.

Things to Know Before Visiting Washington DC https://dctrails.com/things-to-know-before-visiting-washington-dc/ https://dctrails.com/things-to-know-before-visiting-washington-dc/#respond Mon, 31 May 2021 10:24:20 +0000 https://dctrails.com/?p=722 Continue reading Things to Know Before Visiting Washington DC]]> Packed with fascinating history, beautiful memorials, and some of the nation’s most incredible parks, galleries, and monuments, Washington DC is one of the most interesting places to visit. If you’re thinking about where to go on your next vacation, there are a few things to know before planning your visit to Washington DC. Check out some of these tips for planning your vacation to our nation’s capital!

Neighborhoods

For first-time visitors, there’s definitely a huge urge to spend the majority of your time touring the National Mall, or the area between the Lincoln Memorial and the United States Capitol grounds. However, it’s so important to make sure you’re getting out and exploring some of DCs other fascinating neighborhoods as well! Don’t forget to check out Georgetown with its gorgeous cobbled streets and architecture, the charming and historic neighborhood of Logan Circle, the outdoor markets and nightlife of Adams Morgan, or the city scene minus the skyscrapers in Dupont Circle.

Planning Your Route

Make sure you know which of the attractions you want to see are free and open 24/7, and which require some advanced tickets or scheduling. Luckily there are tons of free options for those who might be on a budget, including but not limited to the National Zoo, Smithsonian museums, and many of the memorials such as the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam and Korean War Veterans Memorials, and the Martin Luther King Memorial. If you’re looking to visit the White House, the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, the Holocaust Memorial Museum, or the Washington Monument, however, you should look into booking ahead and doing some research to find out what types of options for touring are available.

Be Prepared!

Before you visit Washington DC, make sure you come with all the correct supplies to get the most out of your trip. Bring a water bottle so you can refill at fountains during your many walks and tours, especially during spring and summer, and a good pair of walking shoes is also highly recommended. Make sure you also have a comfortable bag with you to store your water, hand sanitizer, snacks, and other travel essentials. One of the amazing things about DC is that there are so many attractions so close together, so whether you’re walking between locations or hopping on and off a bus, make sure you have everything you need to spend your day outdoors sightseeing.

The Best Ways to Tour Washington DC https://dctrails.com/the-best-ways-to-tour-washington-dc/ https://dctrails.com/the-best-ways-to-tour-washington-dc/#respond Fri, 28 May 2021 10:21:47 +0000 https://dctrails.com/?p=719 Continue reading The Best Ways to Tour Washington DC]]> Whenever you’re booking a new trip, it can be tricky to know exactly the best way is to tour the local attractions. When it comes to Washington DC, the sheer number of interesting locations and attractions available to visit make it an amazing option for anyone looking for a fascinating and jam-packed touring experience.

If you’re looking for the best way to tour Washington DC, we have some tips that will absolutely help you with planning out your experience.

No Tickets Required

One of the best parts about touring Washington DC is that there are so many incredible spots that are free to visit and open 24-hours a day, 365 days a year! Locations like the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, the FDR Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Martin Luther King Memorial are all open for you anytime, meaning it’s easy to work your schedule around the crowds of tourists. Don’t forget to also check in with the National Park Service to see all of the free NPS-run memorials as well, and of course, the National Mall!

Mapping Out Your Routes

While it’s great to pack your trip with lots of activities open 24/7, some of the cooler activities require some strategy in terms of when you visit and booking ahead. For example, when the court is not in session, visitors can explore the Supreme Court via free self-guided tours, and if the court is in session there’s also the chance to listen to oral arguments, however, both of these activities require some planning ahead. Tours of the Capitol can also be arranged in advance with free reservations on their website, and tickets for the Washington Monument can be booked up to 90 days in advance, with limited releases of tickets the day prior and the day of visits.

Learn from an Expert

One of the best ways to tour all of the different sites available is through an open-top bus tour. This gives you the chance to learn fascinating historical tidbits from professional tour guides, rest your legs between major attractions, and easily plan out your route.

If you’re interested in having a professional bus tour service help you have the best tour experience in Washington DC, then get in touch with DC Trails today. We offer private touring charters for our professional day tours. Contact us today and let us book you one of the best touring experiences available so you can make the most out of your DC excursion!

If you’re planning your first visit to DC, it can often be overwhelming to know where to start given how much historical significance is jam-packed into the city. Lucky for you we’ve compiled a few of our best tips for your first trip to Washington DC.

  1. Plan Well in Advance

Once you’ve set your tour dates, you’ll need to get the ball rolling if you want to get access to some of the more exclusive landmarks. While there are tons of free activities you can do and locations to visit, there are many places that are closed for walk-in visitors. If you’re angling for a White House tour you’ll need to submit a request to a member of Congress or go through an embassy if you’re international, and tours of the U.S. Capitol also need to be arranged in advance. When you’re planning your itinerary, make sure you’re also taking into account the distance to get to each landmark, and remember the Mall is actually much bigger than it looks on television!

  1. Consider Time of Year

Before booking your trip, make sure you’re considering the time of year. Summer can get pretty hot in the DC area, plus its peak tourism season. Winter is definitely quieter tourism-wise, and spring and fall are great options as well, especially if you’re interested in seeing some beautiful cherry blossoms!

  1. Guided Tours are the Way to Go

While it’s possible to plan out your own path to see all the different monuments and landmarks, a guided tour is the better option. Whether it’s through a chartered bus or a hop-on-hop-off style double-decker, you’ll get guaranteed transportation to and from the biggest landmarks along with all the best historical insights from trained and professional guides. Plus you can save your energy to thoroughly explore each location rather than spending it all walking from place to place!

  1. Don’t waste your money!

When it comes to tourism, DC has some amazing options for even the most budget-conscious. All of the monuments and memorials are free to visit, as well as many of the beautiful parks and even the National Zoo! There are also tons of free museums including the Smithsonian museums, the National Gallery, and the Hirschhorn, and the public transit systems allow for great access to all of these locations, so no need to spend money on car rentals!
